• Google Play distributes malware.

The cryptocurrency market may still be down, but malware is on the rise and still penetrates into the largest application markets on the Internet.

Google Play Store has once again been the hosting of malicious applications designed to steal cryptocurrencies. A program called Clipper was discovered by ESET researchers.

Clipper tracks and intercepts clipboard software, which is often used to copy and paste crypto wallets addresses. It modifies the string so that the funds are sent to attackers. This crude form of crypto-hacking was spread a couple of years ago and has now become relevant again.

Researchers claim that they found malware on Google’s official Android App store and on Cnet. Android / Clipper.C has evolved a bit from previous attempts to change wallet addresses. This version mimics Metamask on Google Play.

“We noticed Android / Clipper.C shortly after it was introduced to the official Android Store. We reported the discovery to the Google Play security team, which removed the app from the store, ”the message says.

There is no mobile version of Metamask, it is only available as a browser plugin for Firefox and Chrome. The methods used to steal cryptocurrencies are becoming more sophisticated, and although it was relatively primitive, the fake Metamask application looked very authentic.

Last month, malware was found hiding on movie download sites. It can fake search engine results by filling them with malicious links from the advertising injector that came with the downloaded movie.

It is also not surprising that Monero is still the main target cryptocurrency for malware. Reports show that up to 5% of Monero’s total shipments have been lost due to similar software.

Browser companies are raising their stakes in the fight against malware. According to EWN, new features for Firefox will protect users from malware for crypto mining.
